Welcome to CHS American History at Ballston Spa High School. Thank you for joining a select group of students who decided to challenge themselves academically in high school to prepare for the rigors of college level coursework.

In the past I have posted a summer assignment that covered a large portion of Time Period #1 (1491-1607)in the form of an independent study. Due to the unprecedented school closure in the Spring and the uncertain reopening plans for the Fall, I have reshaped the summer assignment into a brief student snapshot (Google Form) and a writing sample on the European Age of Exploration (Google Doc).  Please take the time to provide thoughtful and complete responses to all questions, keeping in mind your submissions are my introduction to you as a student.

The writing sample I have assigned on the Age of Exploration is designed to give me a sense of how you analyze and articulate your understanding of a writing prompt. One of the biggest differences between Regents level history and CHS history is the frequency and complexity of the writing assignments.  It is important for me to get a sense of how you write and what evidence you choose to include in your analysis. I have posted several resources to help you formulate your responses. They are posted in the “Age of Exploration Resources Folder” and include the following:

The American Pageant: This PDF version of our course textbook will be available for establishing historical context for the time periods we will be studying. Feel free to use this resource if you need to reacquaint yourself with the European Age of Exploration

Time Period #1 Notes: Our course will be broken down into 9 historical time periods, each with a posted PDF copy student notes.  This is an opportunity to get acquainted with the format and presentation of my notes and the corresponding digital version on our supplemental course website: www.americancanvas.pbworks.com.

Historical Podcast:  The 8 minute podcast is an example of the type of audio resource I will be posting through the course. Each podcast is chosen for a specific reason and will usually be less than 12 minutes.

Both your Student snapshot and writing sample will be due Monday, August 31st at 11:59 pm. If you chose to submit your summer assignment on or before Monday, August 17th, I will offer 2 omits on your first multiple choice assessment. In other words, if you get two free points on your first test.  I don’t curve my assessments, so I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity.

If you have any questions or concerns about the expectations for the summer assignment please do not hesitate to contact me.

Regards,

Mr. H
