Thesis Writing: The Constitutional Convention [1787]

Crafting a Thesis Paragraph: The purpose of a thesis statement/paragraph is to clearly lead the reader through your essay. A solid thesis will clearly make a claim or argument and provide organized/categorized evidence to forecast what the essay will be about. Think of your thesis as the “road map” to your essay. It will provide the reader with the stops along the way to the final destination—the conclusion.  Be sure to make your C.A.S.E in your thesis statement!

The Framers compromised the conflict of representation by determining the number of representatives based on the census and there would be two representatives in senate. Also, the conflict of slavery was compromised by counting slaves as 3/5 of a person for representation and taxation. Lastly, the conflict of democratic rights was compromised by the creation of the electoral college and the president was voted for indirectly.

Our Founding Fathers debated many issues and their ability to compromise on issues like representation with The Great Compromise, slavery with The 3/5ths Compromise, and democratic rights with the Compromise on Executive Elections played a huge role in our Constitution being a successful

The U.S. Constitution was built upon willingness to compromise, for example, the disagreement between larger and smaller states on how they should be represented led to the creation of the senate and congress; The conflict between north and south on the slave trade led to slave importation being outlawed in forty years, and conflict between Federalists and Antifederalists on individual rights led to the creation of the bill of rights.

After the American Revolutionary War, it became clear that the Articles of Confederation were no longer proficient in governing the new nation. Therefore in 1787, a Constitutional Convention was held. The willingness the Framers had for compromise was reflected in the creation of the Constitution that successfully addressed the needs of the young republic. The Framers were able to compromise on the issues of representation, slavery, and democratic rights. The Great Compromise pleased both the small and large states with a bi-cameral legislature. The 3/5 Compromise helped to take into consideration both Southern and Northern states when dealing with slave representation and taxation. The Electoral College solved the issue of how a president should be elected.
